How To Refresh & Protect a Deck

Refreshing a deck is easy using premium Johnstone’s woodcare products. Built for superior speed, durability and ease of use, Johnstone’s offers a fully water based range of innovative woodcare products to keep your deck looking great, year after year.
 

Step 1. Identify the Timber

Firstly, identify the wood on your deck, if it’s hardwood such as Merbau or softwood such as treated pine.

Step 2. Preparation & Maintenance For A Deck

New Timber

Tannin Removal

Equipment Needed: Watering Can, Bristle Broom & High Pressure Water Cleaner

• Shake Johnstone’s Professional Hardwood Tannin & Oil Remover thoroughly
• Apply to a cool surface, out of direct sunlight
• Apply undiluted to wet timber (using a watering can or sprayer)
• Scrub into timber surface with a stiff bristle broom. Complete in sections
• Leave on for 10-15 minutes
• Rinse off exterior timber surfaces thoroughly using maximum pressure from a garden hose or using a high pressure water cleaner

Important: Wear protective gloves, eye wear and clothing. Cover surrounding plants and surfaces for protection.


Timber Cleaning

Equipment Needed: Bristle Broom & High Pressure Water Cleaner

• Shake Johnstone’s Professional Deck & Timber Cleaner thoroughly
• Apply to a cool surface, out of direct sunlight
• Dilute 4:1 with water
• Scrub vigorously with stiff bristle broom
• Leave on for 10-15 minutes
• Rinse off thoroughly using maximum pressure from a garden hose or using a high pressure water cleaner
• Apply a suitable filler onto completely dry timber to fill deep holes. Follow packaging instructions

Important: Wear protective gloves, eye wear and clothing. Cover surrounding plants and surfaces for protection.
 

Weathered Timber

Equipment Needed: Bristle Broom & High Pressure Water Cleaner

• Shake Johnstone’s Professional Deck & Timber Cleaner thoroughly
• Apply to a cool surface, out of direct sunlight
• Dilute 4:1 with water
• Scrub vigorously with stiff bristle broom
• Leave on for 10-15 minutes
• Rinse off thoroughly using maximum pressure from a garden hose or using a high pressure water cleaner
• Apply a suitable filler onto completely dry timber to fill deep holes. Follow packaging instructions

Step 3. Coat A Deck

Equipment Needed: Flat Paddle, Decking Brush or Applicator Pad, Sandpaper Plate, Paint Tray

• Ensure the deck is completely dry before you coat. Apply to cool surface, out of direct sunlight
• Lightly sand surface prior to coating
• Stir thoroughly Johnstone’s Professional Deck Oil before and during use
• Apply liberally along the length of the timber boards including exposed edges and end grain preferably by brush or applicator pad
• Apply two coats allowing 1 hour between the first and second coat
• For increased durability, longevity and coverage apply a third coat
• Allow the surface to dry for 24 hours before returning any heavy furniture
